Abstract Architectural Photography

Not every building photograph needs to show the whole building. Gil Stose photographs the abstract side of architecture — line, shadow, repetition, and material — work built from the same technical foundation as his full-building documentation, developed over decades of looking closely at how structures are actually put together.

THE APPROACH

Seeing the Detail

A staircase is a place to stand and photograph, but it is also a set of curves repeating into a pattern. A glass ceiling is shelter, but it is also a grid of light. Gil Stose’s abstract architectural work comes directly out of his documentary practice — the same eye that photographs a building for an architect’s portfolio also notices when a hallway, a facade, or a staircase resolves into something closer to composition than record.

This is not a separate discipline bolted onto his architecture work; it is what happens when the same technical control — over perspective, light, and material — is pointed at a smaller frame. The results are used editorially, licensed for print and digital publication, and sold as fine art.

Abstract architectural photography is often produced during the same shoot as full architectural documentation, at no additional access cost to a project.
